The correct position for your baby in a baby wrap
Before we show you how to tie a baby wrap, there are two important points to mention. Let's start with the first: what’s the correct position for a newborn baby to be in when he or she is inside a baby carrier?
Newborn babies don’t have a straight back like adults, they have a C-curved spine. They aren’t able to support the weight of their own head until around 2 or 3 months old and their hips are still developing.
A good quality baby sling should accommodate for such physiological characteristics and provide both comfortable and support to young infants.
The best pre tied baby wrap should offer the right level of support to their curved back and tiny head. Their legs should maintain an M-position, with their knees positioned higher than their pelvis by about 45°.
We must also ensure the baby wrap does not wrap around the back of their knees; their knee joints must remain free.
Forward-facing baby wearing, clarification
Koala Cuddle Band 2 is designed to carry your baby on your front, in a heart-to-heart position. This is for two reasons: the first is that it’s the correct babywearing position for those first few months for several motives. Firstly, to respect a newborn’s natural physiology. This also respects the physical contact a young infant has an innate need for, just like when inside mum’s tum.
The second reason is that this position protects a baby from external stimuli, which is still overwhelming for them.
As your baby grows, you can then also try hip or back carrying methods, with other baby carrier slings, for example Koala Cuddle Wrap Stretchy – an unstructured baby wrap sling.
The second reason heart-to-heart positioning is used for young infants, is that forward-facing position is not recommended, especially for babies only a few months old. Why shouldn’t I use the forward-facing position when babywearing?
It forces the baby into an incorrect position: their back is too erect, their legs dangle down and aren’t supported, it forces their hips into an incorrect position.
- It fully exposes a baby to external stimuli: noise, light, people. Young infants have yet to learn how to handle such stimuli, which can be overwhelming to newborns.
- The position doesn’t have the right level of support needed for a baby to fall asleep.
- It doesn’t provide a good view of your baby and you’ll be unable to pick up on their communication cues.
- It impacts on a parent’s posture, as you’ll have to arch your back to compensate for the excess weight across your waist, putting strain on your lower back.
How to tie baby wrap for newborn - tying methods
Koala Cuddle Band 2 can be tied in two different ways, both of which are very simple. The Simple X is the most common, mainly as it’s the one you’ll use for the longest period of time. The front Double Hammock, on the other hand, is perfect to use with young newborn babies. Let's take a look in more detail:
