Flat Head Syndrome, or Positional Plagiocephaly as it’s known in medical terms, is quite common in newborn babies. It can be caused by several factors, however, it’s usually a result of infants spending a lot of time lying on their back. 

Their tiny head, which is still relatively soft and malleable, can tend to flatten following prolonged contact lying on a firm surface (mattress, car seat, crib...). This deformation which occurs on the skull, laterally or posteriorly, is called Positional Plagiocephaly. 

It is normally only a mild condition which often improves by itself over time, however, in more severe cases, it can lead to cognitive and motor development issues. Therefore, it is a good idea to take preventive measures or intervene promptly if it does occur.
